India’s swine flu toll touches 730, over 22,000 affected (Lead)
December 15th, 2009 - 10:55 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Dec 15 (IANS) A record 23 swine flu deaths were recorded in India Tuesday, taking the total toll due to Influenza A (H1N1) virus to 730, health authorities here said.
According to union health officials, 11 deaths occurred in Haryana due to swine flu in the last 10 days, but were confirmed Tuesday. With these deaths, the toll in the state has gone up to 22.
Rajasthan continued to see swine flu deaths with four fatalities reported Tuesday. The toll in the state has now touched 100.
Two deaths each were reported from Punjab, Goa and Gujarat, while one death each occurred in the national capital and Uttarakhand.
In Delhi, a 24-year-old woman died of swine flu, taking the total number of fatalities due to Influenza A (H1N1) in the city to 45.
The woman, a resident of Karol Bagh in central Delhi, was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital Dec 1, an official said.
“The woman was diabetic and was treated for brain haemorrhage. She died Tuesday morning,” Anjana Prakash, additional nodal officer handling swine flu cases in Delhi, told IANS.
Delhi recorded 136 new cases of swine flu Tuesday. Of them, 78 were children. This has taken the cumulative total number of swine flu cases in the capital to 7,642, Prakash said.
Also, 194 new cases were reported in the country Tuesday, taking the total number of people affected with the contagious flu to 22,164.
New cases were also reported from Maharashtra (33), Uttar Pradesh (28) Rajasthan (23), Gujarat (10) and Kerala (4).
