India reports one polio case this year

New Delhi, Aug 9 (IANS) India reported only one polio case this year as compared to last year, the Rajya Sabha was informed Tuesday.

In a written reply, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Sudip Bandyopadhyay said only one case was reported in the past six months in the country.

“This is a 96 percent decline over the last year for the same period,” the minister said.

The minister said the health ministry carried out immunizations in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar West Bengal, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Chandigarh and Delhi.

Both Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are epicentres of the polio virus.

Bandyopadhyay said the government has taken multi-pronged steps to control the virus, including improving sanitation, hygiene and availability of clean water.
