Health ministry served notice on irregular vaccines
December 9th, 2009 - 9:23 pm ICT by IANS ( 1 comment )New Delhi, Dec 9 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday issued a notice to the union health ministry on introduction of vaccines without proper medical research.
A division bench of Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah and Justice S. Muralidhar said, “This is a serious issue. It shows that medical facilities provided by the government are just mockery.”
The court asked the health ministry to respond to the notice by Jan 13.
The court was hearing a petition that alleged that vaccines are being introduced in the public health system by the government under the influence of vaccine manufacturers and international agencies like the World Health Organization (WHO), without proper epidemiological and medical studies.
“We just want to highlight how in the absence of a rational vaccine policy, newer and newer vaccines are being pushed by the government into the national immunization programme. Vaccines which are either of little utility or not required at all are being introduced and promoted by the government at the behest of these vested interests,” advocate Prashant Bhushan said in his petition.

Lack of commitment at some level has lead to lapse in credibility. Technical persons should handle technical issues. They should be respected. Unfortunately, the ground realities are different.
Let me site one simple example-there are few doctors and staff working under Pf monitoring teams under NVBDCP for the past 30 yrs. who work in difficult field level (village, forest, tribal and Naxal affected areas) giving all care to patients. An under Secretary of ministry recently wrote about them that they are not eligible for DACP as per recommendations of 6th pay commission since they are not giving patient care. They have no promotions for the past 30 odd yrs. People sitting in offices and CGHS write either rpt. all or refer and according to him it is patient care. Where is justice in this country? It is a human right violation. No one to ask for. Such a government can not deliver goods to community. Their definitions vary according to whether it is for them and others. 6th Pay commission has recommended DACP to those doctors and they want to see that these doctors are denied the benefit. Is there corruption even for sneezing in this country? Or else let the top bosses who extract work form this type of staff come out in open and tell the reasons.
Vaccine is a different ball game. I know about the quality of work considered extra-ordinary since the person works for a certain institution. Just by that the person has become famous and so what ever he says is true. Don’t be carried over - all that is white is not milk! Research inclusive done at so called good institutions need not be true. Individuals for their gains can go to any extent. If you have not seen a hindi film -’jane be do yaro’ please look at it. It is a true depiction of our scientific or administrative set up - may be one has to take a pinch of salt to swallow this. I am really sorry.
Naturally, courts have to intervene in some of these cases.
We only hope that one day sanity wins over all these and the country develops. There are no values in our system today. It will come by this process of questioning the authenticity by various quarters.
