tollNov 1, (THAINDIAN NEWS) A group of experts are likely to hold a meeting later this month to advise the government about what type of preventive care for females should be categorized under no cost to the patient, as per the health overhaul bill of United States President Barack Obama. This initiative is all set to spark a brand new debate in the United States regarding whether birth control can be offered free of cost to women.

While talking about the prospect of offering free birth control to females, Sen. Barbara Mikulski who is the lead author of the women’s health amendment has emphasized that the main intention here is to take into account family planning. Experts feel that in order to rule birth control free of cost for women, the main bone of contention would be whether birth control can actually be categorized as preventive medicine and what does the term preventive medicine holds under its purview. Although many critics might contradict the characterization of birth control as preventive medicine, many medical health experts support it. Obstetrician-gynecologist Dr. David Grime who is associated with the University of North Carolina has reiterated that there are valid evidences that suggest that family planning plays a major role in improving health as well as saving lives.

However, religious leaders have expressed their reservations about offering birth control for free to women saying that it cannot be considered to be a health care but rather it is a lifestyle choice. John Haas, president of the National Catholic Bioethics Center has hinted that there are other ways to avoid having children rather then taking chemicals paid by insurance.
