Haiti cholera toll rises to 2,535

Port-au-Prince, Dec 19 (IANS/EFE) The toll in the cholera epidemic in Haiti has risen to 2,535, the public health and population ministry said.A total of 114,497 people have been affected by the outbreak, according to the ministry bulletin released Saturday.

Around 58,190 people have been hospitalised due to the disease, of whom 56,463 have recovered and have been released.

Cholera, which has plagued the Caribbean nation since October, has spread through all 10 provinces of the country.

According to the ministry, the northwestern province of Artibonite has been hit the hardest by the cholera epidemic, with 807 dead.

A French medical study said the outbreak was due to faecal matter being dumped in a river from a camp of Nepali soldiers, members of the UN Stabilisation Mission in Haiti.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said he will soon constitute a group of scientific experts to investigate the origin of the epidemic.
