July 2, (THAINDIAN NEWS) An emergency warning was issued to the residents by the Greenlawn Water District after a fecal bacteria was found in one of the wells in the area. The Greenlawn Water District have asked the residents to boil their water before consumption and also use anti-bacterial soap during washing their hands. The authorities have also updated their official website, after the news of the bacteria spread, for people who want additional information on the warnings.
Frank DeMayo, the crew leader and in-charge of the flushing said that the authorities discovered a non-fecal bacteria in their routine check on Thursday. After looking into well 16 they came across the fecal (e.coli) bacteria and immediately issued the warning. He said that the well will be flushed by Saturday and till then the authorities will chlorinate the well. The chlorination will continue till the Board of Health approves that the water is safe for consumption. The bacteria was found on Thursday afternoon and the authorities closed the well for one hour between 12 to 1 pm. Well 16 affects the communities living in South Greenlawn, Laurel Hill, Commack and South Elwood.
The fire department of the area has also co-operated with the authorities and provided drinking water-bottles for the residents. The official website of the Greenlawn Water District has said that the water is presently being treated with calcium hypochlorite and that explains the different taste of the water. They have also said that the awkward taste will disappear after the flushing is done. The site also mentions that the authorities are now thoroughly investigating the source of the contamination.
