brush London, May 30 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Scientists said that good tooth brushing habits decreases the risk of heart diseases. They said that people who brush their teeth at least twice a day, are more likely to have lower chances of heart disease. As part of the study the researchers studied the dental habits of more than 12,000 adults in Scotland. And they found that the people who didn’t brush their teeth twice a day, have a 70% extra risk of heart disease compared to all those people who had good dental habits.

Richard Watt, who belongs to the University College of London, led the study and he said that the reason behind the increased risk of heart disease, is that people with poor dental habits have inflammation in the mouth and the gums. And the oral inflammation plays a critical role in the development of clogged arteries. He also said that people who smoke are all the likely to have heart disease. He revealed that smokers with poor dental hygiene have a 135% extra risk of developing heart disease.

According to Reuters, Watt said that, “Compared to things like smoking and poor diet, which are obviously the main risk factors for heart disease, we are not claiming this is in the same league. But … even after controlling for all those things there is a still a relationship between this very simple measure of tooth brushing and heart condition”.
