Jan 3, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Ailments related to mental aging and reduction of cognitive abilities have been a subject of attention in the medical community for decades. Many such diseases still do not have a specific cure. There are a number of plants and herbs people use for getting relief from various ailments and physical problems. However, the healing power of some of the herbs have been challenged by scientists in recent times. The latest herb that has come under the scanner of researchers is Ginkgo Biloba. This herb is said to possess the power to reduce the speed of cognitive decline in aged adults. A group of researchers, guided by the University of Pittsburgh, performed a study on some recipients of the herbal supplements. They think that Placebo shows better results than this herb.
The researchers feel that Ginkgo Biloba is not much effective in reducing cognitive decline, contrary to earlier beliefs. The doctors prescribe the supplement worldwide for the patients of neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer disease. As per the data available from the study, the herb does not act differently on patients according to factors like gender, race and core cognitive capabilities. This may create a stir in the medical community as the herb Ginkgo Biloba has a lot of proponents.
Not all Ginkgo Biloba based supplements available in the market are certified by the FDA and a person should buy such a product after consulting a qualified doctor. In some cases, side effects like headache and nausea have also been reported. The study may put many Ginkgo Biloba based products under scrutiny.
