Four more babies die in Bengal hospital
November 14th, 2011 - 10:25 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Nov 14 (IANS) The number of crib deaths in West Bengal’s Malda district hospital has shot up to 18 since Nov 9 with four fresh deaths since Sunday, officials said.
“In the last 24 hours, four babies have died. All of them were underweight. They were brought to the hospital in a very critical condition. All of them were underweight,” the chief medical officer of Malda, Swapan Kumar Jhariat told IANS Monday.
Jhariat added that in order to cope with the rush of patients a new unit for sick new-born will commence operations soon.
Between Oct 25-28, 16 babies died at the B.C. Roy Children’s Hospital - the only children’s referral hospital in Kolkata. The Burdwan Medical College and Hospital reported 12 infant deaths Oct 27-28.
Earlier in June, 18 babies had died at the B.C. Roy Children’s Hospital.
Banerjee had then ordered a probe into the matter but later gave a clean chit to the authorities.
