Nov 17, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The federal regulators are likely to take a move to ban a number of caffeinated alcoholic drinks later this week. Among the drinks under the scanner is Four Loko which has a liberal mix of alcohol and Caffeine. According to the health experts a single can of this drink is equal to three cups of coffee and 5 beers. Since the drink is very cheap the college students like it a lot. The Fed officials are stern on banning the drink and 4 states have prohibited the drink already. The FDA is likely to ban the drink in the wake of an incident where 9 students became seriously ill after consuming the drink. The students who like the drink often fail to gauge how powerful it can be.
The company that makes the drink however, has a different view. They are of the opinion that making the consumers aware about the effects of drinking the stuff is more effective than banning it. The company may challenge the Fed Ban if it comes into effect. The company also has a plan to come up with a version of Four Loko that will not have caffeine in it. It was admitted by the co founders of the company Jaisen Freeman, Jeff Wright and Chris Hunter. It has been reported that the FDA and FTC will warn makers of alcoholic drinks against adding caffeine to their products.
The consumer groups and Health research entities along with US lawmakers are making efforts to ban such drinks for quite some time. Beth Martino a FDA spokeswoman said that the entity “is reviewing the scientific data regarding the safety of these drinks” but she did not reveal anything more on this context.
