Foods to Help You Sleep, Fight Depression

Altering the brain’s chemistry has long been a way for people to improve sleeping habits and alleviate depression. Prescriptions such as ‘Ambian’, and ‘Zoloft’ are well known for a sleep aid and depression, but what many people may not be aware of is the fact that these desired effects can be achieved naturally. Certain nutrients which can be found in different foods can change the chemistry of the brain without the harmful side effects which prescription drugs may cause.
Food which are high in complex carbohydrates can help you rest and alleviate bad mood or sadness since they help produce neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, which can help you relax, as well as lift mood, and regulate the appetite. The amino acid known as Tryptophan converts into serotonin once it is in the brain. Pasta, potatoes, whole wheat bread, brown rice and cereals as well as sweet potatoes, corn and carrots all contain this amino acid, which is often the reason for the “after Thanksgiving Dinner” nap.
Boosting dopamine can alleviate issues such as depression, low sex drive, a loss of satisfaction, compulsions, addictions, cravings, as well as an inability to focus. Tyrosine is another amino acid which is very important in helping with depression and resting.
This building block of protein can be found in dairy products, meats, poultry, nuts, almonds, avocados, bananas, lima beans, pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds. These food are great for those on low carbohydrate diets. They help the brain to release dopamine and norepinephrine, which can help make you more focused and alert. Foods rich in Omega 3s are good for treating both depression and sleeplessness as well.
