BARCELONA, SPAIN (BNO NEWS) – A Spanish man who underwent the world’s first full face transplant has revealed his new look after the March 20 surgery in the Vall d´Hebron hospital in Barcelona.
Oscar underwent an intense surgical procedure which used around thirty medicine experts. The surgery lasted 22 hours. It was the first time that a patient has received a full face transplant as the eleven previous transplants made in France, Sevilla, Valencia, U.S. and Chine were only partial.
The patient thanked, with slight difficulty, the hospital staff and the donor’s family for their actions. His sister said he was very happy because this day was the beginning of a new life, similar to the one he had before.
The procedure consisted in the transplant of muscles, nose, lips, maxilla, palate, teeth, cheekbones and the mandible. Doctors said Oscar can expect to regain up to 90 percent of his facial functions within a year and a half of therapy.
Oscar, 31, was unable to breathe, swallow, or talk properly after a shooting accident five years ago. Two months after the surgery, he is able to talk, drink liquids and speak.
He said he expects to walk on the streets without being observed, going fishing and hunting.
