Washington DC, May 26 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Food and Drugs Administration said that heartburn drugs like Prilosec and Nexium could be the cause of bone fractures during prolonged use. The FDA has therefore warned doctors and patients against using the drug for more than a year. The FDA issued the warning on Tuesday, and said the association between the drug and bone fractures was not immediately known, but the agency said more studies have tracked increased risk of bone fractures.

The FDA also added that the studies showed increased risk of hip, spine and wrist fractures. The drugs belong to a group of drugs called ‘proton pump inhibitors’ and they are widely used in the United States. Last year, the total sales of the drug were $13.6 billion. This whooping figure of $13.6 billion made the proton pump inhibitors the third best selling prescription drugs in the United States. The drugs have widespread usage, as they are available over-the-counter. Some of the common prescription brands are Prevacid from Takeda and Nexium from AstraZeneca. The over-the-counter forms available include Procter & Gamble’s Prilosec.

The Food and Drug Administration has issued a new directive to the drug manufacturers to put warning of the potential risk of the drug on the labels.
