Washington DC, Jun 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A Food and Drugs Administration report says that airline food could pose a serious health risk to passengers.

The FDA says most of the meals are prepared under unhygienic conditions. The report also said that many airline-catering facilities violate the necessary sanitation regulations.

The report comes from an inspection carried out by FDA inspectors on the kitchens of three of the major airline’s food caterers. They are the LSG Sky Chefs, Flying Food Group and Gate Gourmet. These three caterers combined operate about 91 kitchens all over America, which serves most of the major airlines in the world.

Annually, they serve food to about 100 million flight passengers all over the world. The damning report said some of the facilities had rats, flies and cockroaches at the kitchens. The companies were also blamed for employing workers who were not hygiene conscious. The report cited the companies for storing foods and food items under wrong temperatures and poor handling of food.

Report made it clear that the practices of the caterers expose passengers to food poisoning. However some airliners say they require their caterers to provide a report of the FDA inspection and expressed shock at the revelation.

The three caterers said they have accepted the findings of the report and were working on fixing the problems.
