FDA Says ‘New Morning After Pill’ is Effective and Safe

June 15 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A brand new ‘morning after pill’, which is said to be longer lasting, appears to be effective with no unexpected side effects, according to a statement from the FDA which was released today.
The pill, which is made by the French company HRA Pharma, can reportedly be taken up to five days after a woman has unprotected sex, and should still work as suggested, to prevent an unwanted pregnancy. In documents which were released by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) the pill was said to be a safe and effective form of birth control.
A public meeting will be held on Thursday so that a panel of the FDA’s outside experts can discuss whether or not the FDA will be recommending the one pill treatment for sale in the United States. Watson Pharmaceutical will sell the drug if the decision is made to release it.
Since issues of birth control, abortion, and ‘right to life’ are such a large part of American culture, the debate over these pills has already been sparked again. The elleOne morning after pill has already been approved for sale in Europe.
HRA Pharma claims that the drug works by preventing the female’s egg from ovulating, not by aborting an already fertilized egg, a fact which may ease the minds of ‘right to life” activists. There are still concerns, however, as to what the effect would be on a baby if the pill fails to prevent pregnancy, since there were not enough failures during testing for research to be done.
Young women are also urged to remember that sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS and HIV cannot be prevented with drugs such as this, and unprotected sex is absolutely not safe, no matter what pills are available.
