June 17, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): A German based leading pharmaceutical company ‘Boehringer Ingelheim’ has manufactured Flibanserin, a pill which is supposed to be the first ‘female viagra’. But, the pill has failed impress the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In their review data, the FDA has said that the drug could not boost women’s desire to have sex any more than a placebo.

The clinical trials did not show impressive results, as per the FDA website, where the results are posted. According to the review, the response rate of Flibanserin was not convincing when compared with a placebo. The drug could yield only a little improvement while treating the hypoactive sexual desire disorder or HSDD.

The FDA review further added that the drug failed to boost women’s libido. Moreover, several women complained having side effects like depression, dizziness and fainting.

The flibanserin is proposed to have Girosa as its trade name. Boehringer Ingelheim, the manufacturer of the drug is still keeping his hopes alive about the effect of the drug.

Executive director of U.S. medical affairs for Boehringer Ingelheim, Peter Piliero said, “We are sure that Flibanserin can take effect slowly while balancing the chemicals in the brain associated with the sexual desire.”

Piliero added, “A vigorous program conducted by us proves that flibanserin can improve the satisfaction level in the sexual activities, like increasing the sexual desire and lowering distress.”

According to the media reports, there will be a voting by an FDA committee on Friday on the effectiveness and safety of the drug ‘Flibanserin’ to be used by the women with low desire.

Dr. Irwin Goldstein, director of sexual medicine, Alvarado Hospital in California stated, “The women now go through the horrible HSDD. The drug may start a new era for women.”
