FDA issues warning on hand sanitizers
April 23rd, 2011 - 12:53 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattWashington DC, April 22 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Food and Drugs Administration in the United States has given a stern warning to hand sanitizer companies against making claims to the effect that their products protect against bacterial infection. Some companies have subsequently been asked to change their labels.
The FDA on Wednesday said any company that claims that its product can protect against diseases should first present scientific studies to that effect before the product gets to the market. The administration has subsequently sent letters to Tec Laboratories, JD Nelson and Associates, Dr. G.H. Tichener Antiseptic Co. and Oh So Clean Inc. to change their labels within 15 days.
In a statement, the FDA said companies will no longer be allowed to make unsubstantiated claims about their products. The compliance director of FDA, Deborah Autor, in the statement made it clear that, “The FDA cannot allow companies to mislead consumers by making unproven prevention claims.”
If the affected companies fail to comply with the directive of the FDA in the given time, the only available option for the administration is to take the companies to court where the companies could be closed down.
