October 18, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): It has been reported that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a Botox Injection that aims to prevent headaches among the adult patients. The FDA suggested that the drug can be sought by patients who experience more than 15 days of migraine headaches each month. A recent survey has revealed that on an average 3.2 million Americans suffer from chronic migraines. The new drug is likely to induce some relief to the long time migraine sufferers.

For the new use, doctors have been advised to inject the drug into the neck or the head of the patients in order to dull the effects of the headache. Migraine can be excruciating for the patients and right now cures include drugs like Codeine and Advil. Cutting down caffeine intake and reducing stress at work also work for certain patients.

The FDA has finally approved the new drug usage after two company studies conducted on 1,300 volunteers involving Botox injections gave conclusive results. Patients who received the Botox injection suffered from fewer headaches compared to those who received sham injection. Allergan is one of the primary producers of Botox in USA. Right now Botox accounts for $1.3 billion of the company’s $4.4billion sales.

Botox is primarily known for its remarkable ability to smooth wrinkles on forehead, this is used as an anti-aging tool by many individuals. However Botox is also highly effective in treating neck spasms, eye muscle disorders, and underarms sweating. The drug has been effectively used to treat cerebral palsy patients as well. Botox is slated to become more mainstream since FDA has approved its usage to prevent migraines.
