FDA announces the Similac recall because of beetle infiltration at the manufacturing plant
September 24th, 2010 - 12:26 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattSep 23 (THAINDIAN NEWS) FDA has announced a recall of the Similac brand baby formula, because they suspect that a variety of the small beetle might have infiltrated one of manufacturing plants.
FDA also revealed that as such the beetles are not a threat to human life, but they might pose some danger to the infants. According to a statement by the company, “While the formula containing these beetles poses no immediate health risk, infants who consume formula containing the beetles or their larvae, could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract. If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, a physician should be consulted.”
FDA officials also advised parents that in case the infants have any of the symptoms, then they ought to take their children to the pediatrician.
The manufacturer of the products said that there was also a slight possibility that some of the recalled products may also be home to beetles and/or their larvae as well. The recalled products include Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers and Similac powder product lines, which are offered in sizes such as 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans
Parents can obtain more information about the recall by calling (800) 986-8850.
