July 15th, 2009 - 9:30 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 15 (IANS) Eight medical colleges including five run by the Madhya Pradesh government are set to be derecognised by the Medical Council of India (MCI), Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad told parliament Wednesday.
Of the eight colleges, six are government medical colleges - five in Madhya Pradesh and one in Uttar Pradesh, and they are facing action for not complying with the MCI norms, Azad informed the Lok Sabha.
The state-run colleges are MGM Medical College (Indore), Shyam Shah Medical College (Rewa), Gandhi Medical College (Bhopal), Gajra Raja Medical College (Gwalior), Netaji Subhash Chandra Medical College (Jabalpur) and BRD Medical College (Gorakhpur).
The rest two are private colleges - Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Medical College in Karnataka and Bhausaheb Deshmukh Memorial Medical College in Maharashtra.
Azad told the Lok Sabha that the MCI undertakes periodic inspection of the medical colleges in order to maintain the standard of medical education and health services in the country.
“The medical colleges which are found not meeting the requirement as per the MCI regulations are recommended to central government for withdrawal of recognition,” the minister explained.
