June 28, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): According to a new research study, dermatitis is found to have links to the risks of cancer. The conclusion requires more research studies but the scientists have come closer to the root cause of the disease.

A skin irritation occurs in patients suffering from Atopic dermatitis, which is more prevalent in children. It is speculated that the regular rashes can actually weaken the immune system thus increasing the risk of developing cancer. Dr Alejandro Arana’s study has showed that it might happen.

The research team of Dr Alejandro has said that either dermatitis or the medication is causing the cancer risk. Initially, the study showed opposite results but later it showed indeed the dermatitis is linked to cancer.

A dermatologist at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, Dr. David Margolis said, “These studies are very difficult to conduct properly. The meaning of the studies becomes very difficult to understand sometimes. People are required to put their results in viewpoint.” The Dr was however, not involved with the study.

Dr Margolis stressed on the fact that the risk is found to be very lower in the studies itself. The study involved 4.5 million people. Among them, 1.5% was diagnosed with specific type of skin disease and less than 3% had some form of cancer.

In conclusion, Arana said, “Just going by one study, we cannot establish a cause and the link. All the studies together can finally decide if there is any specific link between the two.”

Whatever be the final result of the study, but people should be more aware and careful regarding their health.
