Washington DC, Mar 24 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Health concerns have prompted Del Monte Fresh Produce to voluntarily recall almost 5,000 cartons of cantaloupes. The recall is being supervised by the Food and Drugs Administration.

The recall was announced following concerns that the affected cartons could be contaminated with the bacteria, Salmonella Panama. The affected products were distributed in Alaska, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. The products were all sold between the 10th of March and the 21st of March this year.

The recalled cartons contain 4 plastic mesh sleeves with 3 cantaloupes found in each sleeve. The plastics are beige with plastic orange handles. They have the following Lot Code printed on the cartons; 02-15-24-10, 02-15-25-10, 02-15-26-10 and 02-15-28-10.

The FDA has announced that it has received about 12 cases of salmonella Panama infection in connection with the products.

Salmonella is a potentially fatal bacterium. Though the immune system is much stronger and can easily fight off salmonella attack, the case is not the same in people whose immune system has been weakened either by age or disease. Symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, diarrhea, bloody stool, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. If left untreated, it could lead to death.
