Aug 31, (THAINDIAN NEWS) According to a new study, the total number of young athletes in high schools who had to be taken into an emergency room due to concussions due to sports related reason has doubled over the last ten years. The research which was published in the journal Pediatrics on Monday pointed out that the even as the participation of the young athletes in some of the organized sports gradually reducing, the total number of concussions were suffered by children in high school is escalating.
The study which was undertaken by researchers at the Hasbro Children’s Hospital and Brown University, is the first study which takes a look at the concussions among the school-age children who are likely to be more vulnerable to complications from such kind of head injury in comparison to adult athletes. After the study was carried out, the researcher concluded that around 100,000 children in schools between the age group of 8 to 19 visit an emergency room owing to a concussion while around half of them is due to sports. In the meanwhile, a set of new guidelines have been issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics which gave an insight about what parents and physicians should do in case of a concussion among kids due to sports.
Dr. Mark Halstead, who was a co-author of the recommendations, has revealed that the awareness among the parents and the doctors about concussions is on the rise. A concession is basically an injury to the brain that is not structural but functional in nature and there is no medication or particular therapy which might treat the injury, Dr. Mark Halstead further added.
