Chewing Gum for Heartburn for 30 Minutes After Meals is Effective
January 14th, 2011 - 11:23 pm ICT by Angela Kaye MasonJan 14 (THAINDIAN NEWS) According to studies which have been performed for several years, chewing a piece a gum for thirty minutes after a meal can be very effective in neutralizing the acids which cause the burning sensations that are a sure tell tale sign of heartburn. As these reports show, not only does chewing gum help to freshen our breath, but it also helps relieve the symptoms of heartburn.
What it is believed that the gum does is to help push the fluids back into the stomach, and to flood the esophagus with alkaline saliva. One of the studies included thirty one people who had been fasting for four hours. They were then given a meal which was high in heart burn causing foods, that included, “two bars of full-fat cheddar cheese, green salad with two tablespoons of mayonnaise, 15 large chips, and half a pint of full-fat milk.”
Afterward, a few of the subjects were randomly chosen to chew gum, and see what the results would be. After they had been chewing the gum for thirty minutes, tests showed that their acid levels were much lower than those who did not chew the gum.
