California, June 24, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The state of California has been hit badly by whooping cough, so much that the state health authorities have declared it as an epidemic. As per the latest findings, 5 infants have died from the outbreak and the medical community is on alert.
They have asked the citizens to protect themselves against this outbreak by getting vaccinated. The kid with Latino background are said to be more vulnerable than others. In some cases infants die from the ailment as the parents do not detect the ailment in time. Since it does not cause fever in kids, they often mistake it to be flu or common cold and proper medication is often not administered.
The doctors have said that this is among the severest outbreaks of the ailment in recent years. The view has been echoed by the California Department of Public Health.
Summer is the time of the year when the disease reaches its peak. In July and August the doctors gen ore patients afflicted with whooping cough. The kids who died from the ailments wee under 6 months and all of them were Latinos as well. The disease is not rare in the USA but this year it has hit California the hardest.
The infants are given vaccination to safeguard against the disease but before reaching 6 months they continue to be vulnerable to it. The effect of the vaccination reduces with years and booster doses are required as and when a kid grows up.
The doctors in California have asked the afflicted people to stay away from the kids and newborns for safety.
