British NGO to help reduce India’s maternal mortality
July 22nd, 2010 - 10:28 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 22 (IANS) A British NGO said Thursday it would help India achieve the United Nations Millennium Goal of decreasing the maternal mortality ratio by three-quarters by 2015.
According to Marie Stopes International (MSI), the main motive of launching this campaign is to strengthen public-private partnerships’ initiatives for delivering family planning services in India.
“Our focus will be to reach out to the underserved, hard to reach rural areas where maternal mortality rates are higher,” said Martyn Smith, programme director, MSI.
As of now, the MSI will be working in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
MSI will invest $1 million in 2010 to serve 50,000 people.
The maternal mortality rate in India is 254 per 1,000 live births.
Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh report the highest number of maternal mortalities in the country.
