British hospitals waste money importing food from China
November 28th, 2011 - 8:15 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Nov 28 (IANS) Hospitals across Britain are wasting millions of pounds by importing food from Thailand and China instead of making patients’ meals from local produce, a study has said.
The study by food campaigners The Soil Association found that one-third of all hospital meals were branded inedible by patients, according to The Sun.
At least 63 percent of patients asked their families to bring food from outside.
One medical centre cooked meals containing fish that was sent to China to be de-boned from another unnamed far eastern country before being sent to Britain.
Some hospitals served chicken imported from Thailand while others flew in vegetables from the rest of Europe.
The National Health Service Supply Chain, which sources food for many hospitals, bought just five percent of its fish and seven percent of peas and beans in the country.
Soil Association policy director Peter Melchett said: “Most hospitals have food that is bad. They should be ashamed of themselves.”
