July 5, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) in the US, has announced on Friday that a Colorado company named Rocky Mountain Natural Meats of Henderson is going to recall 66,000 pounds of bison meat suspecting contamination of a deadly strain of E. coli.
The E.Coli sickness has led to this recall. Already, there is a report of six people falling sick following the consumption of the meat, as per the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The issue has become very serious as E.Coli can cause kidney failure too. Bloody diarrhea and dehydration are other symptoms of E.Coli infection. The E. coli O157:H7 is reportedly a deadlier form of the bacteria.
According to a report of FSIS, a “cluster” of people in Colorado have been suffering from the illness. In Colorado, five people have been diagnosed as ill due to the bacteria and in New York a person has been affected between June 4 and June 9.
The meat products were produced in the time period of May 21 and May 27. These products were distributed all over the country to many distributors and stores.
As per the FSIS report, the ‘sell by’ dates for these products with the establishment number of EST. 20247, have already been crossed but the consumers might have frozen the meat for further use. FSIS informed that these bison meat products must be cooked at a temperature of at least 160 degrees F.
Great Ranger Brand All Natural Ground Bison, Nature’s Rancher Ground Buffalo, The Buffalo Guys All Natural Ground Buffalo 90 percent lean, Medallions, Rocky Mountain Natural Meats Inc. Bison and Great Range Brand All Natural Bison Sirloin Steaks are the meat products which are being recalled.
