New Delhi, July 12 (IANS) Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is the president of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), will decide on the future of a sacked doctor who was cleared of charges of sexually harassing a boy under his treatment, official sources said Tuesday, the second day of a fast by the medico’s ex-colleagues.

“The administration will write a letter to the president of AIIMS who will decide on reinstating the doctor. Director N.C. Deka would be doing that by July 15 (Friday),” an official from the premier health institute told IANS.

On Tuesday, a fast launched by AIIMS doctors demanding reinstatement of former resident brain surgeon Shejoy P. Joshua entered its second day. Around 200 doctors have joined the protest.

The Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) denied being informed about any decision of the institute on Joshua’s proposed reinstatement.

“As of now, we have not been told about the decision taken by the director. In case we are told, we will talk to the administration and decide on calling off the strike,” Debajyoti Karmakar, president of the RDA, told IANS.

Joshua was suspended Feb 3 after the relatives of an eight-year-old boy being treated by him complained that the physician sodomised him in his room.

The junior resident doctor was accused of molesting the boy, a resident of northeast Delhi admitted to the neurosurgery ward for a brain tumour operation, Jan 18.

A police investigation detected gaps in the allegations against the doctor and gave him a clean chit.
