New York, April 1 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The month of April has been declared as autism awareness month. The month-long awareness program would be used to educate the population to the plight and the challenges facing people with autism. How to properly care for people with autism would also be highlighted as part of the activities marking the month.

The first ever autism survey was conducted by Autism Speaks in the wake of the awareness month. The survey was meant to determine the kind of care that people with autism get. The survey found a very disturbing trend because 74 percent of people with autism said they are not happy with the care that they get. The other 26 percent approved of the care that they get. About 840 people with autism were involved in the survey.

The co-founder of Autism Speaks, Bob Wright, released a statement saying, “These survey results confirm what we hear every day from families - that they are struggling to get their children services that are essential to their development and well-being.”

Wright indicated that the main purpose for the study was to highlight the plight of people living with autism while encouraging those with the disease to speak out.
