Antibiotics can control superbug: Expert
May 4th, 2011 - 10:36 pm ICT by IANSPune, May 4 (IANS) Disciplined use of antibiotics can control the multi-drug resistant Delhi superbug, which created widespread controversy last month, a top microbiologist said here Wednesday.
“A superbug in a human body is not unusual. However, it is advisable that the use of antibiotics is disciplined to control this specific bug,” said Renu Bhardwaj, Dean of B.J. Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital.
British medical journal The Lancet, in a report in April, said that NDM-1 (New Delhi metallobeta lactamase-1), a bacteria with multi-drug resistant gene, was found in sewage and drinking water samples in Delhi.
However, India maintained that the capital’s drinking water is safe, and questioned the credibility of the study.
“The superbug is not exclusively India’s. Data from across the world document the emergence of similar bacteria from at least 28 countries,” Bhardwaj added.
“NDM-1 cannot be transmitted from one person to another. It is not air borne,” she said.
