Alfalfa sprouts being recalled because of salmonella outbreak

alfalfa-sprouts Los Angeles, May 23 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A nationwide recall of alfalfa sprouts has been announced because of salmonella outbreak. According to reports, around 20 people have fallen sick in over 10 states, because of the outbreak. After the outbreak reports came, the Los Angeles county firm – Caldwell Fresh Foods announced the recall.

“We’re very sorry that this has happened. Alfalfa sprouts are strictly controlled” by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. “We follow all of their guidelines to a T,” according to Maurie Thomas, who is a general manager at Maywood-based Caldwell Fresh Foods. It was also learnt that the alfalfa sprouts were grown in Maywood, and then they were packed and sold in numerous retail outlets. Many restaurants also used to source their sprouts from the Caldwell Fresh Foods. Apart from that they are also sold in many other retail establishments such as Trader Joe’s and Wal-Mart.

The sprouts which are part of the recall were packed in ‘four-ounce plastic cups and one-pound plastic bags under the Caldwell Fresh Foods brand; four-ounce plastic cups under the Nature’s Choice brand; five-ounce plastic clamshell containers under the California Exotics brand; and two-pound and five-pound plastic bags in cardboard boxes with a Caldwell sticker’, according to reports. People who have these packets can get a refund from the store where they were bought.
