AIDS on the downswing in Brazil, but 630,000 still sick
November 29th, 2011 - 11:32 am ICT by IANSBrasilia, Nov 29 (IANS/EFE) The mortality rate from AIDS in Brazil fell from 7.6 per 100,000 suffering from the disease to 6.3 between 1998 and 2010, but there are still 630,000 carriers of the HIV virus in the country, the health ministry announced Monday.
The statistic was presented by Minister Alexandre Padilha, who warned that, although the incidence of AIDS in the country is lower, in recent years there has been a rise - although she did not specify how much of an increase - in the number of cases in homosexuals between the ages of 15 and 24.
The number of cases in women in the 13-19 age group has also risen, and she said that figure stood at 137 last year and for the first time exceeded the number of males in that age group suffering from AIDS.
“Those figures really attract attention and are of concern,” the minister said, adding that the total number of AIDS sufferers in Brazil had remained relatively static over the past four years.
Just as with the mortality rate, Padilha emphasized that between 1998 and 2010 there was also an important reduction in the number of children infected with HIV by their own mothers during pregnancy.
The data presented Monday also show that in 2010 AIDS killed 11,965 people in Brazil, and the disease has killed 241,500 people since 1980.
