aidsJuly 20, (THAINDIAN NEWS) There is a ray of hope for the victims of AIDS or those who want to keep the incurable disease away from them. A new cure has been found for preventing the deadly HIV virus from spreading from an infected person to another. It is a commonplace knowledge that the virus gets spread mostly through unprotected sex. A group of researchers has discovered a gel for women who can use it during intercourse and reduce their chances of getting infected. AIDS has been declared a global pandemic and effort are on to curb its speed all over the world. Among the 33 million people afflicted with the disease and around 16 million are women.

This new gel gives a woman more protection during sex and it may also protect them from those men who do not use protection during intercourse. The vaginal gel contains a special anti-HIV drug named tenofovir and it is sold by Gilead Sciences Inc as Viread. The initial study results are quite encouraging but more extensive tests need to be carried out before it can be implemented at the mass level. The research was done by the Center for the AIDS Program of Research in South Africa and two researches named Salim S. Abdool Karim and Quarraisha Abdool Karim deserve the credit for it.

While the gel does not make a woman immune from getting infected with HIV it cuts down the chance of infection by a good margin, the study has shown. The finding has excited the medical community that is struggling to come out with a potent solution to stop the menace named AIDS.
