September 16th, 2010 - 6:01 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Sep 16 (IANS) The national capital reported 73 more cases of dengue Thursday, taking the number of people infected with the mosquito-borne disease to 2,085 so far, an official said.
The vector-borne disease has this year claimed five lives in the city, including one from outside Delhi, an official of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) said.
The rising number of dengue cases, around 70 a day, has set alarm bells ringing for the civic body which is fearing the number of cases this year may cross 3,366 cases registered in 2006.
Many MCD hospitals are also complaining of shortage in platelet supply.
The infections crossed the 2,000 mark Wednesday when Delhi reported 79 new cases.
Dengue symptoms include high fever for four to five days, usually accompanied by severe headache, body pain, muscle and joint pain and rashes. After the fever subsides, the blood platelet count starts dipping.
