1.5 lakh fowls culled in bird flu hit West Bengal
February 11th, 2010 - 10:51 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Feb 11 (IANS) Over 1.5 lakh fowls have been culled in bird flu hit West Bengal since the authorities confirmed the outbreak of the contagion Jan 14.
According to officials here, new centres have emerged since the outbreak was first confirmed in Hazrabati and Nagar villages in block Khargram of Murshidabad district.
“Containment measures have been carried out as per the contingency plan. So far 150,686 birds have been culled and 18,190 eggs have been destroyed,” according to an official statement.
“The situation is being monitored on a daily basis,” it said.
The union health ministry has stationed a three-member central rapid response team at Murshidabad to assist the state health authorities.
Bird flu normally infects only birds and, less commonly, pigs.
