Lucknow, Oct 20 (IANS) Ten people have died here of an illness marked by high fever, vomiting and headache in the past five days. But health officials are yet to ascertain the specific cause of these deaths.

Director General of Medical Health S.P. Ram Wednesday convened a press conference to brief media about the deaths in Khadra, but he left it midway after reporters repeatedly asked him to name the disease causing the deaths.

“The deaths should not be attributed to any mysterious disease or fever. We have the disease-wise break-up of the deaths. I will get it for you people,” Ram said before leaving the press conference.

Later the press meet was presided over by Lucknow Chief Medical Officer (CMO) A.K. Shukla, who too could not name any specific disease behind the deaths.

“As of now we cannot ascertain any exact reason behind the deaths, but it could be possible that the death took place due to unhygienic living conditions in the Khadra locality,” said Shukla.

Officials, however, ruled out dengue as the cause behind the deaths.

Meanwhile, a team of doctors and paramedical staff were camping in the area.

“A 24-hour ambulance service has been started exclusively for the residents of Khadra,” said Shukla.

Ten people have died in the Khadra locality since Oct 16 after suffering from high fever, vomiting and headache.
