Hanoi, Oct 27 (IANS) The world population is about to reach seven billion in the next few days, a UN agency’s report has revealed.

The UN Population Fund (UNFPA), whose work involves promotion of the right of every man, woman and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity, has made this revelation through a report on the world population in 2011 titled “Human beings and opportunities in the world of seven billion people”, according to Xinhua.

At a press briefing, UNFPA representative in Vietnam Bruce Campbell said the world’s population will reach seven billion Oct 31.

“The number is a challenge to us. While we have achieved solid foundations for human development, there are still differences and big gap between the rich and the poor. Never before have so many people got hurt by such issues as the loss of food security, lack of water, and occurrence of natural calamities,” said Campbell.

According to the report, the population record is considered a success, because it means that people throughout the world can live longer.

However, it is a challenge to all. With the current growth, the world will have 78 million more people each year, leading to increasing demands on natural resources and big pressure on the planet.

The report says the responsibility should be taken for the development of the 1.8 billion youths and juveniles at the age of 10-24 years who account for over one-fourth of the world’s population. Of them 90 percent are living in developing countries.
