Hyderabad, Jan 1 (IANS) Wild celebrations broke out in this city and other parts of Andhra Pradesh to welcome the New Year.

The city lighted up with firecrackers and echoed with loud cheers of youngsters as the clock struck 12 to ring in the New Year.

Dancing in gay abandon and greeting each other, the youth came on to the streets of Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and other cities in the state.

Despite several restrictions imposed by police in Hyderabad, a large number of revelers filled the streets. Many of them were seen riding motorbikes and driving cars on major thoroughfares.

Celebrations broke out at dozens of star hotels, restaurants, pubs and clubs in the twin cities of Hyderabad, Secunderabad and the outskirts. The revelers welcomed 2012 with music and dance.

Though police had closed Tank Bund and Necklace Road on the banks of Hussain Sahar lake in the heart of Hyderabad and all the flyovers in the city for traffic, this did not deter the revelers from coming out on other roads and celebrate the occasion.

Police teams were also seen at pubs, bars and hotels to enforce the restrictions on sound and to conduct breath analyser tests on those driving the cars. Police made it compulsory for the managements of hotels and bars to make arrangements for dropping home those customers who are drunk beyond the permissible level for driving.

Police commissioner A. K. Khan said police had taken various steps to maintain law and orders and prevent road accidents.

Two people were injured at Shamshabad on the city outskirts when the bike on which they were traveling was hit by a car.
