Vatican Gives Its Support To Adult Stem Cell Research

stemRome, Apr 25, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Vatican has pledged its support to adult stem cell research which would be instrumental in the treatment of intestinal diseases as well as a variety of other ailments. This was announced by officials on Friday although it was clarified that the entire project was in a budding stage right now and it could be quite a few years before the research could lead to any kind of clinical treatment.

It has been revealed that the research would be undertaken by the a group of experts associated with the University of Maryland School of Medicine in which the Catholic Church is going to provide support as well as resources. In an initial announcement made by the university, it had been revealed that the Vatican would be furnishing $2.7 million to the research. However, Cardinal Renato Martino has divulged that the exact amount that the Catholic Church would be donating to the research would be finalized in the future meetings that the Vatican would hold with the university. At the same time, Cardinal Renato Martino has also stated that the Vatican has taken the initiative to support the study owing to the fact that the research takes into account adult stem cells rather than embryonic stem cells.

The Catholic Church is known for its opposition to embryonic stem cell research due to the destruction of embryo which it feels is equal to taking away a human life. Meanwhile, the experts who are undertaking the research have pointed out that the study is expected to shed light into the potential of intestinal cells for therapeutic purposes.
