Turkey brings in more evil eye charms this year
November 15th, 2011 - 11:15 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Nov 15 (IANS) Turkish charms against the evil eye seem to have grown all the more popular in India as the traders have expanded the product portfolio from mere wall hangings or mementoes to pendants, rings, earrings and decorative crystal pieces at the 31st India International Trade Fair (IITF) here.
“We received tremendous response in the Indian market last year. Therefore we have brought more products this time. They give an individual protection against the evil eye, covetous friends and strangers,” Ceyhan Zamur, representing Original Istanbul Kirstal, told IANS.
The price of evil eye products range from Rs.100 for a ring to Rs.1,000 for a wall hanging. The Turks believe the “glass evil eye” protects them from any evil or negative gaze. Even the tail-wings of aircrafts in the country are painted with the evil eye sign.
The concept of evil eye is that if someone curses a person having an evil eye, then the evil eye charm will break and the person will be saved from the curse.
Many cultures have different practices to ward off evil. In India, people conduct a religious aarti and hang a lemon with five long green chillies.
The Turkish pavilion also has handmade woven carpet wall hangings with pictures of Indian god and goddesses ranging from Rs.300 to Rs.1,000 and swarovski crystal mementoes for Rs.150 to Rs.1,000.
Also on offer are stone-studded crystal glasses and tea sets, calligraphy hangings and decorative clocks in the range of Rs.4,000 to Rs.15,000.
“Indian customers love spending on decorative crockery. Therefore we have brought to India designer glasses and containers. They are all handmade products as machine-made are low on quality and for India we only bring best products,” said Zamur.
