Three Nobel laureates to meet Dalai Lama in Dharamsala
October 25th, 2009 - 3:58 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Dharamsala, Oct 25 (IANS) Three Nobel peace laureates will visit this Himachal Pradesh town Tuesday to meet the Dalai Lama and discuss issues related to world peace, an official said Sunday.
“Nobel laureates Shirin Ebadi, Máiread Corrigan and Jody Williams will participate in the PeaceJam Youth Conference (Day of Leadership and Action) along with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The conference will be held at the Tibetan Children’s Village (TCV) school here Tuesday,” TCV schools education director Tenzing Sangpo told IANS.
He said during the conference issues related to world peace would be discussed.
The event would also be attended by Tibetan students of Classes 11 and 12 from different TCV-run schools in the country.
“The objective of the event is to create future leaders,” he said.
Shirin Ebadi was the first ever Iranian and the first Muslim woman to receive the Nobel prize. She got the prize in 2003 for her pioneering efforts for democracy and human rights.
Máiread Corrigan and Betty Williams co-founded the Community of Peace People, an organisation which attempts to encourage a peaceful resolution of the troubles in Northern Ireland. Both were co-recipients of the 1976 Nobel prize, whereas Jody Williams got the Peace prize jointly in 1997 for the international campaign to ban landmines.
