Study reveals that drinking coffee may prevent breast cancer
May 11th, 2011 - 11:57 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattNew York, May 11 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A new research has found that drinking excessive coffee might be good after all- at least in preventing some aggressive forms of breast cancer. The new research was carried out by scientists from Sweden.
The researchers reported that women who drink at least five cups of coffee daily reduce the risk of developing breast cancer by as much as 57 percent. The researchers studied about 5,929 women in the study. All the study’s subjects were within the ages of 50 and 74. Again, half of the respondents had been diagnosed with breast cancer before while the other half had no history of the disease.
The researchers factored the issue of age into the study because previous studies have shown that breast cancer risk increases with age. After the study, the researchers identified that when factors like alcohol use, smoking, genetics and exercise were also considered, women who drank more than 5 cups of coffee were less likely to develop breast cancer when they are compared with those who consume less than a cup of coffee a day.
The study and its finding were published in the journal Breast Cancer Research.
The researchers do not yet understand the relationship between drinking coffee and breast cancer risk.
