Study: Breast cancer linked to breast density
October 8th, 2010 - 8:25 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattA new study has revealed that among women who have a form of breast cancer called ductal carcinoma in situ or DCIS, those with densest breast tissue have the highest risk of having recurrence of the disease.
The studies showed that women who have had DCIS in one breast have three times higher risk of having the disease in the other breast, if their breast has greatest tissue density compared with those with less breast tissue.
The studies also revealed that women with densest breast tissue have one-and-a-half times higher risk of having the cancer return to the operated breast than those with less breast tissue density. The risk of developing invasive breast cancer in each breast is twice higher in women with densest breast tissue compared with those with least breast tissue density.
The research was carried out on 935 women. Researchers examined the women were all former DCIS patients and had their disease treated with breast conserving surgery. All the women had their surgeries between 1991 and 1997.
“This study found real-world data, which is helpful”, according to Dr. Jeffrey Tice, who is the professor of medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.
The results were consistent with earlier study in 2007 on a similar subject.
