Sreedharan to be discharged, but will rest for now (Lead)
April 14th, 2010 - 6:51 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, April 14 (IANS) Delhi Metro chief E. Sreedharan, who underwent a bypass surgery last week, will be discharged from hospital Thursday but is likely to be out of action for six weeks, a doctor treating him said.
Sreedharan is currently convalescing at the Apollo Hospital here. “We will discharge Sreedharan tomorrow. He is recuperating well,” senior cardiologist S.K. Gupta told IANS.
“His family is meeting him regularly. After being discharged he will have to take rest and follow precautions a heart patient takes. We have advised that he doesn’t join work at least for six weeks,” he added.
On April 7, Sreedharan was rushed to the hospital after he complained of severe chest pain at the Delhi Airport from where he was to fly to Kolkata.
Doctors operated on Sreedharan the next day after his right and left coronary arteries were found entirely and partly blocked. Four grafts were planted during a surgery to bypass the blockages.
The Delhi Metro chief is known to have a busy schedule and frequently travels to other cities, often as a consultant on other Metro projects that are underway.
“We don’t know yet when he will join back. However, the work and organisation haven’t been affected. We have the systems in place to cope with his absence. Satish Kumar, our director (electrical), has taken over his duties for now. On Monday we had the weekly heads of department meeting, this is usually chaired by Sreedharan. But the meeting went off as normal,” Delhi Metro spokesperson Anuj Dayal told IANS.
He added: “Satish Kumar, our director (electrical), has taken over his duties for now. On Monday we had the weekly heads of department meeting, this is usually chaired by Sreedharan. It went off as normal.”
Sreedharan revolutionised the capital’s transport with the rapidly expanding network of Metro, work on which began in 2002. He is also lauded for his stint as head of the Konkan Railways.
