Social drinking can cause severe brain damage

Melbourne, Jan 8 (ANI): A new research has found that after ten years of social drinking the brain can get damaged so severely that a 35-year-old is able to do only the given work and nothing else.

Martin Jackson, director of La Trobes Psychological Science Clinic and chair of Arbias, an organisation treating alcohol-related brain damage, is now warning Aussies who like to drink that two million of them risk damaging their brains permanently.

He has implored the Government to provide more funding to the health campaigns and for the advertisers to limit their adverts.

Everything is contentious when it comes to alcohol, quoted Mr Jackson, as saying.

The Government has put in $125 million to stop illicit drug use by only $25 million for alcohol, he added.

In order to make the people aware of the dangers of alcohol consumption, Arbias launched the Hangover for Life campaign, where people were educated about alcohol-related brain damage.

The campaign even provided a checklist to see if you are at risk.

According to Martin, in the early stages the irritability and anger associated with symptoms of brain damage appears to be work-related stress, which created a problem.

They look very similar, Mr Jackson said.

If you are drinking more than six drinks a day and are concerned about your memory, go and get assessed. If you stop drinking your chances of recovery are good, he added.

He said alcohol had a direct toxic effect on the body, burning away the white matter of the brain. (ANI)
