Skeleton on police station terrace awaits cremation
October 27th, 2009 - 9:10 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, Oct 27 (IANS) Chukkan Nishad went missing in July 2007 and his dead body was recovered from a field near his house soon afterwards. His skeleton has been lying on the terrace of a police station for the past two years and his parents are running from pillar to post to get it and perform the last rites.
Chukkan, 22, went missing July 21, 2007 from Ahraula village in Azamgarh district of Utar Pradesh. His body was recovered July 25.
“We went to the police to lodge a missing complaint the same day (July 21). However, the cops chased us out of the police station. When his body was recovered, the cops brought it to the Ahraula police station and since then we are waiting to get it back,” Chukkan’s father Sadharan Nishad said.
The cops said that a DNA test will be conducted to ascertain the identity of the deceased as the body was badly decomposed.
The skeleton was finally removed from the terrace Tuesday when the matter was highlighted by the local media.
“An inquiry has been ordered into the matter and those found guilty will be punished. We will soon hand over the body to the family members of the deceased,” Deputy Inspector General of Azamgarh K.K. Tripathi told IANS on phone.
Staff at the police station were tight-lipped. “Talk to our senior officials. We are not authorised to comment on any issue,” said the officer who picked up the phone at the police station.
