Washington, May 23 (ANI): Chinese researchers at Nantong University say that testing the expression of a protein called TSPAN1 in tissues can prove useful in evaluating the prognosis of colorectal cancer patients.
In a recent study, published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology, the researchers investigated the association between this protein and human colorectal adenocarcinoma.
Lead researcher Dr. Jian-Wei Zhu revealed that total RNA was extracted in 20 human adenocarcinoma tissues for TSPAN1 mRNA assay.
The researcher further revealed that 88 specimens of human colorectal adenocarcinoma were surgically removed.
TSPAN1 protein levels in cancer tissues were determined by immunohistochemistry using a polyclonal antibody against self-prepared TSPAN1.
The correlation between TSPAN1 expression and the clinicopathological factors and the overall survival rate was analyzed by univariate and multivariate assay.
Dr. Zhu and colleagues say that patients with TSPAN1 protein over expression were found to have a significantly shorter survival period than that in patients with TSPAN1 protein negative or weak expression, respectively.
Furthermore, TSPAN1 protein expression demonstrated an independent prognostic factor for human colorectal cancers.
Based on their observations, the researchers came to the conclusion that testing TSPAN1 expression in tissues would be a useful tool to evaluate the prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer. (ANI)
