Schindler’s list on sale for $2.2 mn
March 24th, 2010 - 6:08 am ICT by IANSLos Angeles, March 24 (DPA) One of the only surviving copies of Holocaust hero Oskar Schindler’s list of Jews that he saved from the Nazis is going on sale for $2.2 million.
The list was made available on a first come first served basis through the website MomentsinTime.com, its owner Gary Zimet said Tuesday.
The 13-page list contains the names of 801 Jews that Schindler employed in his factories to keep them from Nazi death camps and is dated April 18, 1945. It is believed to be the only such list in private hands, with the three other surviving copies of the list in museums.
Schindler compiled the list to prove to the Nazis that the workers on it were essential to the war effort. His actions were made famous by the Thomas Keneally novel Schindler’s List and Steven Spielberg’s Oscar-winning film of the same name in 1993.
Schindler emigrated to Argentina with his wife, Emilie, after the war. But he returned to Germany in 1958, where he died in 1974 at the age of 66. He was buried in Jerusalem at his own request.
