Rome, Aug 21 (IANS/AKI) A zoo in Rome is helping its animals overcome the blistering summer temperatures with specially flavoured frozen yoghurt and shaved ice.

The Rome Biopark adopted the new methods to battle this year’s high temperatures, and for the animals to have a more pleasurable time.

Tigers, leopards and lions are getting “meat flavoured ice”, and have been provided with extremely cold water fountains where they can bathe and satisfy their thirst.

Their diet has been changed too. The animals are fed only white meat with smaller portions than in winter.

Monkeys are being given bamboo sticks filled with frozen fruits and yoghurt.

“In a day, we consume about 50 bales of hay and medicinal herbs, 500 kg of vegetables and over 300 kg of fruit, especially watermelon and melon,” said zoo president Paolo Giuntarelli.
